Rainbows are a fan favorite in Yosemite, commonly seen along our flowing waterfalls on sunny days. Halos and coronas around the sun or moon are also a typical sight. Recently, a lucky visitor was able to spot and capture this rare occurrence—cloud iridescence—over Glacier Point. This optical phenomenon is caused when sunlight diffracts off tiny ice crystals or water droplets and creates a rainbow effect. Iridescent clouds typically occur in late afternoons in hot and humid weather, so keep your eye out this weekend! #Yosemite #NationalPark

In Yosemite, we work to protect our pristine dark night skies by monitoring them for light pollution and continuing to implement and promote the use of efficient lighting throughout the park. Every year, around the world, this valuable natural landscape continues to grow in scarcity as light pollution becomes a greater and greater issue. Fortunately, there is something you can do about it! Make sure to use efficient lighting fixtures which meet your basic needs (safety, security, visibility, comfort) only when needed, use downward pointing fixtures, and use motion sensors and timers to insure lights are only in use when necessary. Just these few things can help save this invaluable scenic resource. #Yosemite #NationalPark #Astrophotography #GlacierPoint
